HARP

Elizabeth
Plank

“An extraordinary musician who has absolute mastery of her instrument, with a great deal of character and colour in her playing.” (BBC Radio Scotland) Strength and fragility, virtuosity and emotion, creativity and tradition – Elisabeth Plank combines the greatest possible contrasts in her playing to create a homogenous, brilliant sound experience that is second to none.

As an internationally sought-after soloist and ambassador for her instrument, the Austrian harpist has established herself on the concert stage, presenting the harp in a way that is as versatile as it is exciting: rich in timbres and textures, with an extraordinary repertoire and a broad stylistic range. Elisabeth Plank's tireless efforts to sharpen and expand the harp's profile enrich the repertoire not only with rediscoveries and first recordings, but also with premieres of works dedicated to her and her use of the historical double-pedal harp. Her own arrangements for solo harp have been published by Universal Edition, among others.

Whether as a soloist in recitals, with orchestras, or as a chamber musician, Elisabeth Plank's concerts take her to international concert series and festivals in Europe, Japan, and Latin America. She has performed at venues including Vienna's Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Harpa Reykjavik, Grafenegg, Konzerthaus Berlin, and NOSPR, as well as at the MDR Musiksommer, Moselmusikfestival, Festival Internacional de Música Clásica de Bogotá, Dubai Opera, and Festival de Música de Morelia, Mexico. The harpist performs with renowned ensembles such as the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, the Baroque Ensemble of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, the Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra.

Elisabeth Plank is a prizewinner of prestigious international competitions and received the "Young Celebrity Master" award at the "HarpMasters" Festival in 2014. From 2019 to 2021, the harpist was featured as artist-in-residence at the Vienna Konzerthaus as part of the "Great Talent" series. She is also supported by the "Classical Futures Europe" program and is the first harpist to be a musical ambassador for "The New Austrian Sound of Music" in 2023 and 2024.

Elisabeth Plank's versatility is also documented in her discography: "L'arpa notturna", "1825 – Echoes of Vienna on Historical Harp" and "musings" delighted the international press:

"A thoughtful and beautifully played disc [...] Plank has a real command of light and shade. She's adept at creating musical perspective" (Gramophone). In 2023, the recording of Mozart's Double Concerto with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Howard Griffiths was released as part of the "Next Generation Mozart Soloists" series (alpha classics).

Elisabeth Plank was born in Vienna in 1991 and received her first lessons at the age of seven. She studied with Adelheid Blovsky-Miller and Mirjam Schröder at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and worked with Fabrice Pierre in Brescia.

The harpist holds a teaching position at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and teaches at international masterclasses and workshops. She is also the founder and artistic director of the Vienna Harp Days.
